I’ll give you a shocking analysis. No one spends INR 800 on electricity consumption of an AC.
The bill is more as compared with the promises of ISEER and brands. To know the reason behind this, you have to do two things- 1) read this till the end without skipping 2) read carefully to the message at the end. Friends, let’s discuss some important points about AC. Let’s begin.
First let’s discuss size of the AC. If your room is 130sqft then you must buy a 1 ton AC. If it is 130sqft-200sqft then you must go for a 1.5 ton AC. And for a room between 200sqft-300sqft, one must buy a 2 ton AC. These figures are subjected to change depending upon the sunlight and its location.
Next let’s talk about the type of AC. Buy an inverter AC if your room is sealed. For 6 hours usage for 4-5 months, buy a 3-star AC. For more than 6 hours usage for 5-6 months, buy a 5-star inverter AC. For non-sealed rooms, godowns or shops, non-inverter AC are suitable.
It is important to know the Indian Season Energy Efficiency Ratio (ISEER), known as star-rating in normal words. The power consumption of an AC given right above is checked in test conditions. It is checked on test conditions by operating AC for 1600 hours or above. See this graph for correct information. I am taking a 1.5 ton AC with 5 ISEER rating and it consumes 800 units of electricity in a year. It has a compressor motor of 1300W. With backwards calculations we can say that this AC consumes 800 units with only 615W motor.
Its compressor’s motor works on just 615W for the whole year. In simple words, on 50% capacity the electricity bill will be 800 units per year. But did it happen in the real world? Have you ever received INR600 electricity bill for AC? An inverter AC can save up to 25% of the electricity bill. Brands claim of 50-60% savings is misleading.
Let’s calculate again and check the electricity bill. With same AC and 1600 hours, this AC will consume 2080 units per year on 100% capacity. After decreasing 25% savings because of inverter AC, the result is 1560 units per year. This is double the power consumption written above ISEER rating.
One thing we ignore is installation charges. Brands usually charge INR1000-2000 as installation charges + INR3000-INR4000 extra for copper pipes, stands etc. apart from this is the cost of stabilizer for inverter AC. Don’t fall the claims of stabilizer free operation. Whether you live in Delhi or Bombay, whether there are electricity fluctuations or not, a stabilizer is must for inverter AC. That increases the actual cost of your AC by INR7000-INR8000. The indoor units of an AC have 2 noise levels- lowest and highest.
If the lowest noise level is above 40dB, then avoid that AC because it will bother you during night. Lower the noise level, better the AC.
Do not concentrate on fancy names of technologies. Concentrate on the pros and cons instead. I’ll tell best ac brand in india.

This AC has been released recently. There is 1 con that I want to tell- it has a slightly smaller capacity compressor. Its overall cooling capacity is less. It is a good AC for 170-175sqft room. It is amazing features and it is a fantastic overall AC. till this date, no models of Mitsubishi and Hitachi have been launched. The models that are available right now are of 2018 or older than that. I’ll recommend not to buy them.
ISEER ratings have changed and their power consumption is very high. Were they launched today, then their power consumption and ranking would have been different. You must not buy old models. I have given my recommended shortlisted AC’s list.
